Feeling pain while going to the bathroom and it feels like something is protruding out of the anus? It could be rectal prolapse. Many people suffer from various anorectal issues, but delay in getting the treatment. When taken care of at the first sign, issues like prolapse of the rectum can be resolved with less pain.

What is Rectal Prolapse?
The last section of the large intestine, called rectum may sometimes slip out of the anus. This is called rectal prolapse.
You might notice a small pinkish lump coming out of your anus during bowel movement. This can slip back inside after some time, or stay the same away. It can be painful, but quick evaluation and proper care can make your life better.
The particular cause of rectal prolapse is not known. Some believe that it can happen due to difficulties in childbirth, as many women experience this issue. Also, those who are constipated and straining during bowel movement may also get rectal prolapse. It’s more common in women and in people over the age of 50.
Can Rectal Prolapse Go Away On Its Own?
Sometimes, rectal prolapse can happen in children when they strain too much while passing stools. In those cases, treating conditions that cause constipation or infections can reduce stress on pelvic floor muscles. Also, as their muscles are growing, the condition may go away as they grow older.
For adults, proper treatment is necessary.
How to Fix Rectal Prolapse?
Mild cases can be treated by changing what you eat, doing stretches for your pelvic floor, and taking medicine to correct straining and constipation. But surgery is often needed to fix the prolapse. Your doctor will determine whether to do rectoplexy (abdominal surgery) or perineal surgery, where the stretched-out rectum is surgically removed.
